We and Fraser and Rachael and we live off grid in Lincolnshire U.K. with our two children, Grace and Albie. Based in a woodland which we have grown over the past 15 years, we use solar power for electricity (backed up by a generator), harvest and filter rain water and grow an increasing amount of our own food.
Whilst both of us have always enjoyed spending time in nature, we didn't initially plan for our life together to be off grid. Like so many others, we saved a deposit for a house and bought a small bungalow which we renovated. However, increasingly frustrated by being beholden to banks and energy companies, we decided to sell our house, clear our debts and use the remaining money to set up our off grid life.
The beginning wasn't easy, despite the fact that it was just the two of us (and our two dogs) when we moved into a static caravan on our land. We had no running water and only intermittent electricity from a generator that we couldn't afford to run for more than a few hours a day. This meant that we couldn't use some household appliances, such as a fridge and freezer, so we managed without until we installed our solar power system several years later.
Since moving off grid, we have had two children: Grace and Albie. Whilst family life is very busy, we strongly believe in the benefits that living in a woodland brings to our children and are pleased that they are growing up with space, freedom and a strong connection to nature.
For the past few years we have been sharing our journey on our YouTube channel:
